Plan and Book

Kirksville was established in 1841 when the boundaries of the Adair County were set. According to tradition, Kirksville’s first postmaster, Jesse Kirk, welcomed three commissioners surveying the land to shop by his house and him and his wife served them a turkey dinner. This dinner was done under the notion that the town would be named after the Kirks. While the town is named after Jesse Kirk, the county Adair carries the name of the Honorable John Adair of Kentucky. Many pioneers moved to Missouri from Kentucky where John Adair served in the Revolutionary War and later became Governor of Kentucky from 1820-1824. He also served as the Congressman from 1831-1833.

Kirksville serves as the center for the region’s business, industry, retail, healthcare, education, and recreation. In addition, hundreds of people from surrounding communities come to Kirksville for work, shopping, education, and recreation. Kirksville is a family friendly community for all ages, where you’ll never outgrow.

Enjoy different activities with the family as you visit. Kirksville offers a variety of public parks that you and the family can go to. At the Kirksville Rotary Park, there are three covered picnic shelters that you and your family can enjoy snow sledding, playgrounds, and a sand volleyball court. If you want to play disc golf, Rotary Park also offers a nine-basket disc golf course that is open year-round. There is also an amphitheater that offers outdoor entertainment as you wind down. Looking to go swimming any month of the year? Well, there is the Kirksville Aquatic Center that offers both an indoor pool and outdoor pool that is open year-round for family fun.

After you’ve worked up an appetite, be sure to stop by our local restaurants to fill your stomach. If you’re in the mood for Mexican food, both La Pa Mexican Bar & Grill and Mi Casa Mexican Restaurant offer great options that are sure to hit the spot. If you are looking for Italian food, Bellacino’s Pizza and Grinders is the go-to spot.

Didn’t bring the kids? Kirksville has a few wineries and breweries that you can enjoy. Jackson Stables is one of three West Winery locations and is a popular site to gather with a few friends. Travel south of Kirksville to visit Logboat Brewing Company for a refreshing house beer.
